N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) is synthetically produced by acetylation of L-Cysteine, an amino acid found naturally in protein-containing foods including meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy. The resulting NAC is chemically identical to the compound used in pharmaceutical applications worldwide and is significantly more stable and bioavailable than L-Cysteine itself. NAC and Glutathione
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant in the body, with the highest concentrations in the liver. Of the three amino acid substrates required for glutathione synthesis, cysteine is the least abundant intracellularly and is therefore the rate-limiting substrate. When cysteine availability is low, glutathione synthesis slows regardless of the availability of glutamate and glycine. NAC supplementation increases intracellular cysteine availability, directly supporting glutathione synthesis. Oral glutathione supplements are broken down by intestinal peptidases before absorption and do not efficiently raise intracellular glutathione. NAC, by contrast, is absorbed intact and converted to cysteine intracellularly, making it the most effective oral strategy for raising intracellular glutathione levels.
